Staying Active

It's now accepted that staying active throughout life increases physical and mental well-being.  Since people are now living longer, it's important to fill those days after retirement with sports and pastimes that will not only enhance your chosen lifestyle, but will, as many Baby Boomers and active seniors are aware, keep you fit and alert for years to come.  In many places in the world, it's difficult to take part in activities that might appeal to you, simply because they're not easily accessible or the cost of participation is too high.  Nova Scotia, however, offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, many of which are either free or available at reasonable cost.

Since Nova Scotia is almost completely surrounded by the ocean and also has numerous inland lakes and rivers, many activities relate to the water; for instance, sport-fishing, sea-kayaking, sailing, surfing, diving, canoeing and swimming.  And since all bodies of water in Nova Scotia, including lakes and rivers, are available to the public, many of these activities are free.

Winter weather and topography permit both downhill and cross-country skiing in many areas of Nova Scotia.  There are also many excellent golf-courses, and some, such as The Pines in Digby, are considered to be world-class.  Equestrian centres are found throughout the province, featuring both English and Western riding and carriage driving.  In addition, boarding costs for horses are considerably less than those found in many parts of Canada, the U.S. and the U. K.

And there's good news for the motorcyclist and the cyclist...   With its miles of scenic back roads, stunning views over the ocean, long seasons of fair weather, good restaurants and friendly Maritime accommodation in numerous Bed and Breakfasts, Nova Scotia is now a favourite destination for both motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts.

And speaking of Bed and Breakfasts...  Many people move to Nova Scotia to retire and then open successful Bed and Breakfasts, taking advantage of the important tourist-trade in this province.

Tennis, gardening, birding, running, hiking, gold-panning, touring - they're all here for you, in beautiful Nova Scotia, limited only by your imagination and ability to participate.
